In 2002, Mrs. Thuy was trusted and voted by the local people of Group 6 to become the leader of the Savings and Credit group of VBSP based on her enthusiasm and dedication of local activities. Among 18 years, Mrs. Thuy has become the concrete bridge to connect poor people and loans.

In the early days, the Saving and Credits group of Thuy had only 7 members with a total outstanding loan of about VND 50 million. Until now, the loan has raised up to VND 2 billion with 42 members. Hence, it has created many opportunities for poor households to invest in production and escaped from poverty.

In the case of Lang Thi Thom’s family, in 2018, her family was lent VND 20 million, which has been used effectively to escape from poverty. Mrs. Thom shares that she was the breadwinner to deal with many difficulties. She was supported by Mrs. Thuy to approach the VBSP’ loans and has invested in her own business. Thanks to the loans, Thom is able to open her grocery store with a stable income. Hence, her financial life has improved to have a better condition to raise her kids.

Thuy shares that there were many difficulties to overcome when the group started. Despite getting benefit from the preferential interest rate, only a few households borrowed money because they were afraid of not being able to pay back. On the other hand, households in her area lacked the knowledge of investment. Hence, Thuy had motivated and also guided each household to use the loan effectively.

After motivating local people to lend, Thuy built the group’s operation convention and delivered it to each member. According to the convention, the loan is reviewed in public. Moreover, the interest is collected at each member home on the 8th of each month and the members must pay the interest and principal on time. As a result, there are no overdue debts on her group; the monthly interest reaches 100%; all the group members participate in savings deposits. Until now, the balance has reached up to VND 132 billion.

Especially, Thuy summarizes the borrowing activities of the Savings and Credit group. Thereby, members are able to learn from others. With such a creative way of working, there was no poor household in the group.

Mrs. Thuy is a dynamic, enthusiastic and responsible leader. Having spent 18 years with the credit scheme, she has gone through hardships and difficulties with VBSP staff to bring the credit to people, ensuring a safe and effective source of funds.
