Press Release: Nearly 148,000 ethnic minority families have access to preferential loans
(VBSP News) During 2011-2015, nearly 20 Government preferential credit programs reached ethnic minority communities with total outstanding loan of VND1,141 trillion, helping 147,835 ethnic minority families in remote, extremely disadvantaged, border and island communes have access to production loans for improving their standard of living.
The bank reported that ethnic minority families also had access to foreign sources of capital, including an afforestation project in the Mekong River delta, an afforestation project sponsored by the World Bank in central provinces, and the project to increase farmers’ income in rural areas in the northern mountainous province of Tuyen Quang.
In the Central Highlands region alone, according to the region steering committee, since 2013, over one million families who live on or near the poverty line have had access to loans from the VBSP, which has helped 121,000 families escape poverty, create jobs for over 34,000 laborers, and assist the educational process of nearly 55,000 poor students and pupils.
The preferential loans have also supported the building of nearly 312,000 safe water constructions, restrooms and over 6,000 houses for the poor, making remarkable contributions to reduce the poverty rate from over 19% in 2011 to just 11% in 2014.
