Deputy Prime Minister praises policy credit in sustainable poverty reduction
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc paid Lunar New Year (Tet) visit to Vietnam Bank for Social Policies (VBSP) on February 15.
He stressed that VBSP has made great efforts to contribute to the National Targeted Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction. Deputy Prime Minister Phuc urged VBSP to better implement the administrative reform and review the lending process to facilitate the poor and other policy beneficiaries to access policy credit of the Government; actively mobilize all resources to support the poor, near-poor households to develop production and sustainably escape from poverty; integrate the policy credit to the new rural areas construction; enhance the supervision to ensure the policy loans to the targeted groups. He also asked the relevant ministries and agencies to facilitate VBSP to reinforce the resources for effectively and efficiently implementing policy credit programs, contributing to poverty alleviation and socio-political development of the country.

After 13 years of operation, VBSP has provided policy credit to over 27.9 million poor households and policy beneficiaries, helping nearly 4 million households escape from poverty and creating jobs for more than 3 million labourers, as well as providing preferential loans for more than 3.4 million disadvantaged students, building over 7.6 million facilities of safe water supply and sanitation and houses for the poor, policy households and households in prone-flood areas of Mekong river delta etc,. Policy credit so far has remarkably contributed to decrease the country’s poverty rate from 17% in 2001 to estimated 4.5% as of the end of 2015.
